lyrics

I once spent an evening
with the queen of spanish harlem,
her lips were hard and sundried
her hands were part and parcel.

While you shivered by the homefire
singing songs of my arrival
I thought of you.

It's funny how it is, people trade
the painting for the picture,
the key for the lock,
when all they really wanted
was somebody to hold on to.

Well to pay for what I'd done
I climbed a mountain in the sun,
when at last it was completed
I turned around, started to run.

Still you waited and recited
by the tidal waves and liars,
the verses in your bible
about the passion and the fire,
and they said:

It's funny how it is, people trade
the painting for the picture,
the key for the lock,
when all they really wanted
was somebody to hold on to.

Try to understand,
it's much easier to move than to stand.

I once spent an evening
at a park in south Reseda,
the bench where we first met
still smelled of sweat and missing fingers,

and while I read to you my scarlet letter
with tears in your eyes,
I felt relief.
