Morning slips through the blinds
like a sliver through a cuticle.
We've done it now
for real this time
from what's there to remember.
Was it our sour breath
or faded makeup mess,
turned her smile to a shudder?
Any goodwill left?
Invitations left unsent,
ever to recover?
Graceless.
up too early again.
Another low born.
Out of body,
I watched us
stopped at the crosswalk
in the throes of guilty passion.
On the driver's side,
were we rehearsing lines
or cursing the almighty?
Or were we ten years back
in the basement with the cast
running mouths beyond repair?
Cut to present time,
spaced at the turning light-
now everybody's with us there.
Graceless.
Another low born,
on an uninterrupted streak-
it's the same nightmare every week
harsh eyes trained on me.
Somehow red handed,
clumsy and far from controlled now
laid low,
so low.
Candle by my bed to set a tender scene,
one flailing arm, one finger slip
the flame careens.
As wax drips down and stains the sheets,
it's the same lesson every week-
I'm my own worst enemy!
Left red handed,
watery eye'd unsatisfied now
laid low,
so low.

Cloudless

Would you come out front
and gawk down the block
at the moon with me?
It’s hanging full and low,
and it riles my spirit
like I can’t control.
So would you share that glow?
catch me basking by the power pole.
Crane our necks and hold our breath,
take in a cloudless light alone.
You can’t blame the neighbourhood
for rolling up the sidewalks
at a windchill warning.
Can’t blame that man who scowled
as our eyes drifted right inside his house
and I can’t pretend,
and so I won’t my friend
that I wasn’t curious where you’ve been.
We can talk all you like,
or we can just stand here.
We can share that glow,
stopping all the traffic cold.
We’ll crane our necks and hold our breath,
take in that cloudless light us all
We can share that glow,
full face beaming and the tidal pull
drags you to your feet and
drag the old blood out.
